Puerto Rico Re-mix Day 2

October 9, 2008

Salvation translates. It was a beautiful thing tonight to be able to share my salvation story, or my testimony for some, at the local church. God doesn’t need an interpreter (minus the Holy Spirit of course). There was so much joy in expressing very briefly what God has done in my life. I’m very thankful for the people here. In my cynicism though, is life change still occurring? Puerto Rico is a culture in the middle of an American explosion. But has Jesus truly broken in on the scene?

Fairly eventful day today. We began the actual work on the floor and it was good. Getting my hands dirty and working outside has been a nice change to office life. I never thought I would be in Puerto Rico, working with thin-set quickcrete, getting slightly electrocuted by a drill. The floor is getting along well and we should be finished tomorrow.

Like yesterday, the traffic was a highlight today. We nearly killed a woman walking across the street this morning. The funny thing is, she was in the middle of a major 4 lane highway and looked at us like it was our fault. I also observed a truck with concrete blocks on it that weren’t even tied down in any way shape or form. We had some more ice cream tonight and Joe got his usual corn ice cream. The food has been really amazing on this trip. The sights are definitely beautiful as well. It is very modern third world.

Well, I’m out to bed. I really regret not calling Shana today. I miss her. I really want to be the right man of God for her. Use me tomorrow Jesus.

Puerto Rico Re-Mix Day 1

October 9, 2008

Yes, this is my third post today, but there is so much ground to cover. I want to try and post the journal entries from the Puerto Rico trip. I wanted to blog while I was there, but was unable to, so I will post one or two of these each day.

Day 1

What a great day! We had an excellent flight as we headed out this morning for the island of Puerto Rico. I sat between two interesting people on the airplane. First, we had Will. Will was a young man who was traveling back to Puerto Rico, his home. Will had grown up in America, but his Father was from Puerto. He had lived in Puerto Rico for a few months with his wife. Will had just enlisted in the Navy and was heading home for a few weeks prior to boot. I really want to remember him in prayer. We talked about what I was going to do, but I do regret not digging a little deeper with his thoughts on God. Then there was Beth. Beth was a part of Sesame Street Live that is touring around the country and was premiering in several cities in Puerto Rico. She was a sound engineer for the group and was originally from Pennsylvania. She appeared sick and slept most of the way. At one point, we were all asleep and then rudely interrupted by the pilot.

Our first day has been one of interest. It’s hard to feel like your in a foreign country when everything looks very America. It is an American paradox, because it’s third world America. The biggest difference is that many things, including the language, are Spanish. It’s like America in Spanish (Telemundo!) One of the most obvious differences is the traffic. People drive insanely! Everything is a constant accident waiting to happen. We traveled around a bit and actually ate at a Chinese restaurant. The country and the weather is beautiful. We watched a bit of a sunset and have seen some other amazing views.

Listening to Ed’s parents talk tonight has brought some interesting perspective on ministry. What if ministry was just simple? People + God = Relationship. I wonder how much I complicate it. I am praying that God will open my heart. Shana has really got me thinking. God I don’t want to be so hollow. I’m looking forward to a great trip!
